I knew things were going too smoothly. I've created my prototype XP Pro workstation after setting up my RIS server according to the description in Mastering W2K Server, 3rd ed., pp. 139 to 151. The RIS server is authorized in DHCP and set to respond to requests from clients.

As I was attempting to run riprep.exe I got the following error: "The RIS server to which you are attempting to post this installation does not contain the correct CD-based image. The version of the CD-based image on the server must match the version of the system you are attempting to image [version 5.1, build 2600, lang. English]. Please either select a different RIS server to post this installation to or add the corresponding CD-based image to the current RIS server."

Ok, prior to attempting to run riprep.exe I found that there were some updates and hotfixes to the RIS utilities so the version of riprep.exe I'm running is 5.1.3590.0 dated 11/19/2001. This is from the hotfix Q313069_W2K_SPL_X86_EN.exe. I also have hotfixes for KB articles 327536 and 308508 but I don't think those apply to me as I'm already running SP4 on the RIS server which should have incorporated hotfix Q327536... and the other applies to creating a W2K Server image which doesn't apply to me.

When I first installed the RIS service the first image I installed from the CD WAS an XP Pro image since we have no W2K Pro system on the network. I'm not sure it's in the right location, though. It's located from the RIS share \\<server_name>\REMINST\Setup\English\Images\XP.pro . Could a non-default location be part of the problem? I don't remember having a choice as to where this first image was to be deposited. Is there another location I can move these installation files to or how do I add another CD-based installation file group onto the server?

I've backed up the original files under REMINST\Admin\I386.

Thanks.

Dana,

If I remember correctly the error is due to a version mismatch of ntoskrnl.exe. Maybe the base image is Gold (pre-SP1) and the desktop you're trying to image is SP1.

If the base image you're talking about is the first one that is put on the server when RIS is first set up then, yes, that's the case. However, I'm putting a new image on the server. Why would the RIS service refer back to the original I386 folder I first put on it? Isn't the idea of all this to be able to store multiple types of images?
