I have a win2K server running RIS. I can initiate a PXE boot on the laptops I am trying to configure, and install one of three images. Today, I tried to update the image to include another couple of programs. I did a fresh RIS install, and added the two programs, but did not apply any updates. I then tried to run RIPrep from the server. I recieve a message that says, "The RIS server to which you are attempting to post this installation does not contain the correct CD based image. The version of the CD based image on the server must match the version of the system you are attempting to image (version 5.1 Build 2600, Language English]. Please either select a different RIS server to post this installation to or add the corresponding CD-based image to the current RIS server." How can it be the wrong version when I installed from that RIS server?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cynthia

I’ve encountered a similar problem. Although I cannot yet solve it, I’ve found some elements that might help. Here is the post I was going to add to the W2K Pro section before I saw your post in this section:

I configured a model Windows 2000 Pro SP4 machine with all patches up to date as of May 2004. I want to deploy this model image, using RIS, on 14 other identical computers.

I navigate to riprep.exe on the RIS server, start the program and after a couple clicks, this message displays:

Missing CD Image

The server to which you chose to replicate this system does not contain a CD-based image. The version of the CD-based image on the server must match the version of the system you are attempting to copy. Select a different server or add a CD-based image to this server.

Now, RIS worked several months ago when I created not only the original CD-based image (with slip-streamed SP4) but also specific images of a half-dozen differently configured computers.

After browsing a couple websites, it looks like one (or more) of the hot-fixes applied since the creation of the original images last year may have modified the ntoskrnl.exe file which is now different from that of the CD-based image.

Assuming this is the case,

1. How could I determine which hotfix is causing the problem?
2. How can I download that specific hotfix from Microsoft?
3. How could I integrate it into the CD-based image?

Cynthia: I notice you did NOT apply any updates after downloading an existing image to the laptop, correct? If so, I don’t know what would have modified system files in your case???

Everyone: after backing up the i386 folder of the CD-based image on the RIS server (just in case…), why couldn’t I just copy ntoskrnl.exe from the model computer into this folder, or would that just be to easy? Once again, assuming that this is the problem.

Hi,

I am having a similar problem with XP. I have previously created many images with 2000 pro, and had no problem with a cd based image. However now i made a straight forward risetup image from an xp cd onto the same 2000 server and the xp client comes up with exactly the same error when you run riprep.

"The RIS server to which you are attempting to post this installation does not contain the correct CD based image..."

Had the same problem and think I have it nailed down. I have a an XP pro SP1 CD-Based image on the RIS server, deployed it to a system. After getting the same "The RIS server to which you are attempting to post this installation does not contain the correct CD based image..." error, I decided to compare the NTOSKRNL.EXE versions on the freshly deployed system vs. the one in \\server\reminst\Setup\English\Images\xppro\i386 - guess what? they were different versions! So I checked my logs and see an event ID 4377 in the system log with the description: "Windows XP Hotfix KB826939 was installed." This is the pre-SP2 rollup. So I assume what I must do is either integrate the rollup into my CD-based image, or determine if there's a way to turn off the auto install of the rollup.
