How come if I run AD Users and Computers (or GPMC) on my workstation I can't see all the GPOs? For example, when I look in User Configuration-->Windows Settings, all I see is "Remote Installation Services." But if I open up AD U&C directly on a Domain Controller and open that same node, I see several sub-objects: Scripts, Security Settings, Folder Redirection, and Internet Explorer Maintenance.

How can I make my workstation see all the stuff that's really there?

Thanks,
Rob

Have a look at this thread.

Let me know how you get off, as I never got round to sorting this before leaving the company...

This may sound stupid, but do you perhaps have the little checkbox marked that says "only show configured objects" (or something similar?)

Paul--I looked at the thread you suggested. Registering the ieaksie.dll got me the IE Maintenance settings. I still can't see any of the other stuff, though--Scripts, Security Settings, Folder Redirection. Must be some other dll that needs registering.

Willem--That check box is only for the Administrative Templates node, so it wouldn't affect the stuff I'm looking for here.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

Did you install a custom version of IE6? i.e., one off a PC magazine, or customised with IEAK?

Even if you think you didn't, check Help\About in case. I think it must be a preconfigured setting in IE -as most people aren't seeing this behaviour.

Hi Paul--

No, I put this PC together myself, from parts. And I've never in my life run IEAK. I did check Help\About, just in case. It says Version 6.0.2900.2096IC, Product ID:55736-OEM-7376237-04427, Update Versions:; SP2;

I'm wondering if there's some dll or other file on the DCs that isn't on my workstation. I even installed XP SP2 about 45 minutes ago, just in case that would help. It didn't.

Rob-
It's strange that those MMC snap-ins wouldn't be registered but try the regsvr32 trick with the following:

For Scripts: gptext.dll
For Security/Public Key Policy: certmgr.dll
For Folder Redirection: fde.dll

It's a little weird why those .dll's aren't registered.

I wonder why that's the case??

Nice pointer Darren!!

Notice the product id has OEM in it. That's a big hint

It means it's an OEM copy of Windows, and the OEM probably did it

Hello again--

Well, if the OEM is me, then maybe I somehow did it. But I installed XP on this computer from our open license and have only upgraded it with updates from MS.

More importantly, though, I've got another missing piece: I can't see User Configuration-->Windows Settings-->Security Settings. Security Settings is just missing, like the others before. How do I figure out which .dll needs to be registered in order to fix it?

Thanks,
Rob

In general, all MMC snap-ins are listed under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns
If you fish through that list, you will find all the GPO-related ones. I believe security is controlled via wsecedit.dll.
